On 20 July, the city of Venice celebrates the Feast of the Redeemer, one of the most popular festivities among Venetians.
The tradition of the Redentore festivity dates back to 1577. It takes its name from the Redentore Church, which was designed by the renowned architect Andrea Palladio and built by the Senate of the Republic as a votive temple consecrated to the Redentore for the end of the plague in 1576.
The Church of the Redeemer, a symbol of liberation, every year after almost five centuries, on the Saturday preceding the third Sunday in July, becomes the protagonist of Venice.
For the occasion and to allow the faithful, citizens and visitors to reach the Church of the Redeemer on foot, an evocative votive bridge created with boats is set up on the Giudecca Canal, at the height of the Church of the Spirito Santo alle Zattere.
The blessing of the Patriarch of Venice on the steps of the Church of the Redeemer, in conjunction with the inauguration of the pontoon bridge, marks the beginning of the festivities in the city. This is followed by the first Eucharistic celebration at 7.30 p.m., followed by those at 0.30 a.m. and 8 a.m. on Sunday.
In addition to its religious character, the festival should be remembered for a
great fireworks display held on the night between Saturday and Sunday on St Mark’s Basin, which can be admired either from the square of the same name or by reserving a berth in the basin.
On Redeemer’s Day in Venice there is an atmosphere of sincere and heartfelt popular participation that combines the religious aspect with that of the city’s tradition.
Through the Venice City Municipality website it is possible to book a place to watch the fireworks display on foot or a boat mooring in St Mark’s Basin.
From Terminal San Giuliano it is possible to reach the Historic Centre of Venice thanks to the Linea Rosa public service, which for the occasion will not undergo any changes, maintaining the standard timetables that can be consulted later:
