The symbol of the city
Gondola in Venice are not only a famous tourist attraction all over the world, but the very symbol of the city.
In fact, on top of all the gondolas (at the bow) there is a kind of iron comb with six teeth that represent the six wonderful districts of the city. In order from above: San Marco, San Polo, Santa Croce, Castello, Dorsoduro and Cannaregio.
The tip of the iron is the Doge’s hat (head of state in the Venetian Republic), the bow between the sixth tooth and the Doge’s hat symbolizes the Rialto bridge.
The whole iron tooth forms an S and represents the Grand Canal and has the function of absorbing shocks and balancing the weight of the gondolier rowing from the stern.
The only yard still in operation that builds gondolas is located in the squero di San Trovaso. The building that houses it has the typical shape of mountain houses, an exceptional circumstance for Venice.
